Show Me Tell Me

Any two of these questions can be asked at the start of your practical test.

 

1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has suffient oil.

a.  Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the maximum / minimum markers.

2. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant and tell me how you check the correct level.

a.  Identify high / low level marking. Only remove cap when engine is cold.

3. Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level.

a.   Identify reservoir and explain how to check level.

4. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how to check the level.

a.   Identify reservoir, and check against high low markings.

5. Tell me how you would check the brakes lights are working.

a.   Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc. or ask someone to help you.

6. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before moving off.

a.   Brake pedal should feel firm, not soft and spongy.

7. Tell me how you would check that the tyres have sufficient tread and there condition is safe to use on the road.

a.   No cuts or bulges in tyre wall, 1.6mm of tread across central 75% of width of the tyre and around the entire circumference.

8. Tell me where you would find the recommended tyre pressures and how to check the pressure.

a.    In the handbook, use a reliable pressure gauge check and adjust when only when cold.

9. Tell me how you would check the power steering is working before you start a journey.

a.   The steering is stiffer without the engine running. If the steering is stiff with the engine running, there is a fault

10. Show me how you would check the tail and headlights are working.

a.   Operate the  lighting switch and walk around car.

11. Show me how you would check that the indicators are working.

a.   Turn indicators or hazard warning lights on and walk around car.

12.  Show me how you would check that the horn is working.

a.   Press horn (off road only).

13. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

a.   Apply hand brake and if it comes up too far it is worn.
